anything–even if it’s not publicized, or even if it is largely made up of older material–it sells well.
The Irish rockers dropped a new EP on Friday (July 19) titled Beautiful Day. The short collection is based around the single of the same name, which ranks among the group’s most memorable. Fans of the quartet were quick to pick up copies, and it didn’t take long for it to become a global bestseller.
At the time of writing, Beautiful Day sits at No. 30 on iTunes’ worldwide ranking. It’s beating new albums from well-known musical acts like Deadmau5 (Some EP, No. 37), Highly Suspect (As Above, So Below, No. 38), and rising country-rock favorite Koe Wetzel (9 Lives, No. 40).
Beautiful Day is a nine-song EP that features the original single, front and center. Three remixes of the tune also end the collection, including one by Dave Holmes.
The EP also includes studio versions of the songs “Summer Rain” and “Always.” Those cuts were featured on the extended version of their album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, which was reissued for its twentieth anniversary. “Beautiful Day” was the lead single from the Grammy-winning full-length.
Also featured on the tracklist of the EP are live versions of older songs that fans will know well. “Discothèque,” “If You Wear that Velvet Dress,” and “Last Night on Earth” were all recorded at a concert in December 1997 in Mexico City, and now longtime lovers of U2 can hear them on this short album as well.
“Beautiful Day” is the eighth U2 single to be re-released in 2024 as an EP. The band has been sharing a lot of extra content for superfans, including remixes, live renditions, and more. They’ve been pairing them with tunes that are connected to the title track, likely in an effort to reinvigorate their catalog and delight their longtime supporters. They’ve titled the series the To Love and Only Love collection.
