After not being able to come to an agreement with the Gunners on Ramsdale’s signing, head coach Gary O’Neil has shifted his attention from one England international to another.

Wolves were willing to pay £20 million to buy Ramsdale outright in exchange for his loan acceptance. However, recent conversations between the clubs have not gone as planned.

Instead, Wolves now appear ready to complete the £10 million acquisition of Johnstone from Crystal Palace, with a 2028 contract.

Although he hasn’t featured for Palace this season, the 31-year-old goalkeeper has been a member of the team since 2022 and has faced off against Dean Henderson for the No. 1 jersey.

Additionally, Oliver Glasner, the Palace manager, disclosed that Johnstone desired to vacate Selhurst Park prior to Tuesday’s Carabao Cup matchup with Norwich City.

Glasner stated, “Sam told us he wants to leave, so if he finds a club he can leave.” “And it’s obviously not the ideal situation to start in.”

Johnstone spent eighteen months with Villa on loan from Manchester United prior to moving to London. He then enjoyed four years at The Hawthorns following a permanent move to Albion.
Prior to being sent back to the Championship in the following season, he was a member of the 2019–20 team that won the promotion.

He gained the first of his four England caps during that period.

The acquisition of Ramsdale from Arsenal has cast doubt on Jose Sa and Dan Bentley’s futures, as the two were anticipated to leave Molineux.

In order to bolster his team, O’Neil is keen to add players, and his ideal additions would be an additional attacker and defender.

Before Burnley moved to Ipswich, Wolves had discussions with them on former Albion center-back Dara O’Shea. They have also been in contact with the Clarets regarding winger Luca Koleosho.

Only a portion of the money that O’Neil saw Pedro Neto and Max Kilman depart this summer for combined amounts of about £100 million will be reinvested.

Following Sunday’s 6-2 home loss to Chelsea, O’Neil made the following statement: “The players and the club have a big week coming up. Everyone is aware of our financial limitations, yet despite our successful fundraising during this time, the players still require assistance.
