Former DJ Ken Bruce of Radio 2 talks about his three marriages: “I was a repeat groom.”

Ken Bruce’s recent resignation from BBC Radio 2 garnered global attention.

The seasoned DJ is switching to a new radio station after more than 30 years of broadcasting his well-liked weekday show.

“The risk of continuing at Radio 2 was that I might simply become complacent and think, ‘Well, it’s great, I’ve got this amount of audience, I’m doing this, everything’s working beautifully,'” he said to Kate Thornton on the podcast White Wine Question Time.

“I would just spend the next few years gradually, you know, declining into something that was becoming too easy,” Bruce disclosed as his fear. For this reason, “I like to give myself a little kick, every so often.”

The “small kick” came from switching to Greatest Hits Radio and joining him for his daily PopMaster quiz.

“It’s also a question of whether or not I can successfully go to this station and maybe bring some listeners with me.” He carried on. “I like to occasionally give myself a small challenge.”
Bruce told Thornton that he doesn’t mind facing tough choices in life, especially when it comes to his personal life.

 


He remarked, “It’s not as exciting as it sounds, married three times, [with] six children by those three different women, but it looks bad on paper.” “It seems like I lived a playboy’s life—in fact, I was a serial bridegroom, as someone once said!”

Bruce explained that his first two marriages, each lasting nine years and having children, were “proper relationships.”

He emphasized that “everybody’s happy” and that “all relations between all involved are fine” today.
