What brought your wife to you?
I also rented a house in the same neighborhood where her dad owns a property. Her brother, who aspired to be an actress, and I first met him. After he approached me and told me of his plan, I made a commitment to go to his house.
I saw her when I got to his house, and we are grateful to God today. There’s a proverb that states you will know your future spouse when you see them. Therefore, even though we had to talk for a time before we were married, when I first met her, it was love at first sight.
Why do you feel the need to return home each day?
My spouse cooks really well. She makes delicious food. One of the other reasons I want to return home is my kids. My pals are my kids.
What do you find most difficult about being a father?
The hardest thing about being a father is having to take on the role of a mini-god for your kids and always be there to support and nurture them. You have to support them through every phase of life. What made you want to become a father, and when did you make that decision?
When my grandfather passed away and there was no GSM, I made the decision to become a father. When my dad arrived in Lagos at that time, I recall him telling me that we had to travel to my grandfather’s funeral. On the day when my father came to see me and told me about my grandfather’s passing, my buddy Kunle Ramon Adewuyi, also referred to as Poster, celebrated the baptism of his first kid. My father was aware of this.
My father traveled to Lagos following the funeral to show his gratitude to my companions. He begged them to “do something about his life” (laughs) and called my buddies to inquire why they were not talking to me. He departed. Then something terrible happened. I received the word that my dad had passed away three days later. “Afod, do something with your life,” were his last words to me, and it was all I could think of. “Afod, this man wanted you to be a father and to be more responsible in life,” I told myself. I therefore began making plans right away for how to become a father.
How long after you met your wife did you have your first child?
My first child is now older than nineteen. Back then, there was nothing to squander time on. I quickly began to plan my family. You are aware that a plan you consciously create gets to function right away. Unserious girls will approach you and say they want to date and be with you if you don’t have a clear plan. Some might start making excuses as soon as you tell them, “What I want is a wife, not a girlfriend.” However, God determined that the time was right for me to have my first kid eighteen years ago.
Being a very busy actor, how do you manage to reconcile work and family life?
The majority of my work used to be done in or around my surroundings. These days, I go out a lot, but occasionally, the sets are on my streets or quite close to my house. But I make sure we have live video conversations. I spend about two weeks with them once I return from a two-week trip. I’ve been back home for about four days, but I’m heading out for a set shortly. I set my own hours, and I never forfeit them for anything. I try to make sure my family doesn’t suffer, even if the work is going to bring us millions of dollars.
