BBC NEWS: reporter confirms Middlesbrough in talks for £23m-rated midfielder

With two days remaining in the transfer window, Middlesbrough makes their final choice regarding Alex Gilbert.
Before Friday night’s transfer deadline, Michael Carrick discusses transactions, especially the choice taken over Alex Gilbert.

Since Alex Gilbert has shown he can play a significant enough part on Teesside this season, Middlesbrough has chosen not to loan him out during current transfer window.

Gilbert carried over his strong finish to last season’s disappointing campaign into this one by turning in a strong performance against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup first round. He was among the few Boro players who showed any sign of improvement following Tuesday night’s crushing loss to Stoke City.

Gilbert was an unutilized substitute in the first three games, thus he is still waiting for his first taste of Championship action. That says volumes about the choices Carrick has at the top of the pitch, especially with Riley McGree and Marcus Forss sidelined by injuries right now.

However, after considering a summer loan move for the 22-year-old, Boro have finally determined that they will keep him at the Riverside until at least January. “He’s going to stay with us,” Carrick responded when asked about Tuesday’s loss. He is going to be here.

The Boro manager went on to comment on his performance in the match, saying, “To be honest, I think there was a lot of positives throughout the team, especially first half. Alex was a major factor in the several opportunities and chances we produced. We also have the option of making even more.
