As her full-time career on the LPGA Tour draws to a close, Lexi Thompson shares how she wants to be remembered.
Despite without using the word “retirement,” Thompson attracted attention when she announced it at the US Women’s Open.
Even though Lexi Thompson’s season is only getting started, it’s safe to say that she is an LPGA Tour icon.
Though Thompson will not be playing full-time on the Tour starting next year, she did not use the word “retirement” at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open when she cited mental health as the primary reason for taking a break from the game she has always loved. It is customary to refer to players as legends after their careers have ended.
She remarked in May, “I think we all have our struggles, especially out here,” Golf is a sport where you lose more often than you win, so it’s a constant struggle to keep putting yourself in front of the cameras and
“I’ve found it difficult. Nobody in this room hasn’t, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it all depends on how effectively you conceal it.
Months later, Thompson told Fox News Digital how her decision to share her feelings with the world resulted in overwhelming support during the game. She fought back tears as she talked about her choice.
In addition to talking about her decision to use Maxfli golf balls for her final full-time season, Thompson stated, “It’s been a lot since the announcement, but all in good ways.” “Of course, my family has shown me nothing but love and support, but so have other rivals. The things I stated that week, in my opinion, kind of made it easier for other players and people in general to be honest about their innermost feelings and let them know they’re not alone or that they have to hide some of them.
“I believe that had a greater impact on many individuals than my announcement itself. That’s a significant portion of it, but everyone around me, including my fellow players, has been nothing but supportive.”
Thompson has had time to think back on her incredible golf career while taking in all the accolades. Although Thompson did not utter the word “retirement” once more, she did share her preferences for being remembered both on and off the golf course.
