Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, September 16-22
During this September run, the Mets’ pitching staff has been nothing short of brilliant and this week is no exception. This meter is not without its blemishes, but the Mets were kind enough to concentrate pretty much all of their poor pitching performances into one game this week (Friday’s game). Thanks to the offense providing a lot of run support, the Mets did not play in too many close games this week, but Monday’s and Sunday’s performances stick out in particular, enabling the Mets to start their week with a walk-off victory and end their week with a huge win over Zack Wheeler and the Phillies when offense was at a premium.
We’ll start with Monday’s game, which had Sean Manaea going toe to toe with Jake Irvin, who also pitched very well. Manaea kept the game close and allowed the Mets to come from behind and ultimately walk it off in extra innings. He yielded just one run on four hits through seven strong innings of work, striking out six batters and
walking only one. He did not get the win for this performance, but he did earn a win for another great performance on Saturday when he gave the Mets a quality start against a potent Phillies lineup, giving up three runs over seven innings of work. The Phillies took Manaea deep twice, but he limited the damage, striking out six batters and walking
none. We’ve reached a point where Manaea delivering a quality start every turn through the rotation is almost something the Mets take for granted now, but they shouldn’t. It’s been huge for saving the bullpen and minimizing the need to use middle relievers in close games.
