Tennis is in disarray after Rafael Nadal’s announcement, as the incredible Davis Cup prize money is made public.
Any notion that the Davis Cup has become less important in an overcrowded tennis calendar has been cast aside as the Final 8 countries vying for the coveted title in Malaga have confirmed their squads.
The most striking choice was Rafael Nadal’s selection to the Spain squad, which led to rumors that this might be the last time he plays professionally.
The inclusion of Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in the Davis Cup Finals squad, which will commence their campaign against the Netherlands, was confirmed after Spain’s captain David Ferrer acknowledged he had no idea if the 22-time Grand Slam legend would be able to play in what could be his final match.
“We don’t know anything yet, but I spoke with Rafa,” the former world No. 3 stated.
It is possible that he will be in Malaga with us in November. This year’s Olympics was his aim, but he gave up. It was appropriate not to call him right now since he needed to recuperate and spend time with his family.
“I’ll talk to him about it later. The fact that he is well is what matters. He’ll be a player we can depend on if he shows up in good shape in November.
“There’s still plenty of time to decide which team will play in Malaga. They now have to concentrate on the competitions. I possess a great deal
of good players to choose from.
“It is a positive thing, but at the same time a negative thing: someone will have to be left out. At the moment I am not 100% clear.”
Now it seems Nadal has given captain David Ferrer the indication he needed to include him in his line-up, with the legendary champion having a couple of months to get himself into top shape to offer something to the Spain team.
