Mick Mars ‘Suffered Terribly with Pain’ Per Rick Allen
When Mick Mars announced his tour retirement in October 2022, it made headlines. Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard, claims that Mars’s decision to end his tour was mostly motivated by his suffering.
In a recent podcast interview, Allen stated (via Blabbermouth) that Mick made the decision to truly move on and go on to the next phase of his life. And as everyone knows, Mick has endured excruciating suffering; it’s always evident on his face.
For many years, Mars has struggled with the spinal condition known as Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.). The Mayo Clinic states that over time, A.S. causes the spine’s vertebrae to fuse. This reduces range of motion and may result in a “hunched posture.” There isn’t a treatment for the illness.

“I believe that the only occasion I ever witnessed him fully in his element [was] when he was performing with the band on stage,” Allen continued. It was primarily his choice.
