Sad news: Bill Burr announces unexpected retirement

Bill Burr says performing opening monologue at Tom Brady’s Hall of Fame ceremony was ‘biggest rush’ of his career

It’s likely that you’re still recovering if you attended Wednesday’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Tom Brady.

Bill Burr, a well-known comedian, agreed with such statement.

The Massachusetts native was selected to deliver the first monologue at Gillette Stadium to open the festivities last week. Jay-Z had given a surprise performance to the right of the stage, rapping “Public Service Announcement” as Brady emerged from a tunnel.

In the most recent installment of his “Monday Morning Podcast,” which was released on Thursday morning, Burr declared, “I’m not going to lie to you.”

In terms of simply experiencing the greatest rush I’ve ever gotten from cracking jokes or doing anything else in front of an audience, I believe I had the set of my life last night. I had the privilege of witnessing Tom Brady’s induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame last night in a very small way.”

When Burr accepted the job back in February, he said he had no idea what to anticipate, thinking it would be a low-key luncheon or something like the Patriots had done for past enshrinement ceremonies. He understood as the date drew closer that it was in front of a sold-out crowd at Gillette Stadium.

Even though the comedian looked flawless on stage, you could tell he was anxious. It was more of a toast than a roast, as he thanked Brady for everything the quarterback had done for the team and told a hilarious story of his childhood Patriots fandom before Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick, and, of course, Brady brought the team back to life.

For the next twenty minutes of the audio episode, Burr retells some of his favorite moments of the trip. Talked about seeing Peyton Manning, the wild cheers Belichick and former receiver Randy Moss received, and how glad he was that everything went so smoothly.

Burr reported, “It went great.” “The Patriots organization has the nicest people ever. Going out there in front of that many people is the biggest rush I’ve ever felt in my 32 years as a stand-up comic.”
