For a new CD titled “Drastic Symphonies,” Def Leppard and The London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have teamed up.

“Drastic Symphonies,” which deconstructs and reassembles orchestral renditions of some of Def Leppard’s greatest songs as well as some of their lesser-known tracks, will be available on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed using the audio from the original tapes mixed by the legendary rock group from Sheffield. Along with the orchestral arrangements, the CD features new guitar and vocal arrangements. At certain points, Joe Elliott performs a duet with his younger self.

You can listen to Def Leppard’s incredible new orchestral rendition of their 1987 hit song “Animal” as a teaser for the album here.

According to Joe Elliott of Planet Rock, “Def Leppard has always enjoyed veering off the expected path-working with the likes of Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift & Alison Krauss for example.”

We absolutely leaped at the chance to explore some of our back catalog with the Royal Philharmonic when it was offered to us. Working closely with an orchestra at Abbey Road on some of our more orchestrated songs seemed like too nice of an opportunity to turn down, even though we’re by no means the first band to do this.

In March 2022, the sections performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were recorded at the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London.

Def Leppard, Ronan McHugh, and Nick Patrick—who oversaw RPO before—produce “Drastic Symphonies.”
