Taylor Swift Is “Technically Bigger Than The Beatles And The Rolling Stones Combined,” according to Joe Elliott
DEF LEPPARD and a teenage Taylor Swift collaborated on a CMT episode titled “Crossroads” sixteen years ago. Taylor was a rising celebrity in country music at the time, and her songs were beginning to gain popularity in pop culture. Frontman Joe Elliott of DEF LEPPARD reminisced on his time spent working with the then-18-year-old singer in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. When asked if he had any idea where Taylor was going in 2008, Joe replied, “I don’t think anybody could.” Now that you look at it, it all makes somewhat sense. However, if you go back to 2008, her accomplishments were unimaginable. I am aware of anyone
that was present when THE ROLLING STONES and THE BEATLES arrived will say, “Hold on a second…” However, this is a phenomena that has never been witnessed before by anyone born in the 1990s or this century; theoretically, it is more successful commercially than THE BEATLES and THE STONES combined. The quantity of tickets she sells is insane. But I always expected her to be large. Despite all the challenges she has faced and the individuals who have attempted to undermine her during her career, she has persevered. For a generation of children, she is an amazing role model.”
At the time of the Los Angeles Times interview, Elliott was sporting a black Taylor Swift T-shirt, a memento from the “Eras” tour stop in Dublin, where he had taken his eight-year-old daughter to see the pop superstar. “It was a very magical moment,” Elliott stated, “and I will be forever be grateful to Taylor for making Daddy look cool for a couple of days.”
Elliott had earlier talked about DEF LEPPARD and Swift’s partnership in April. At the time, he said of TVK’s “Rock City” to Japanese music critic and radio host Masa Ito: “It’s a strange thing.” Never once have my 14-, 7-, and 4-year-old children seen me with Taylor Swift. I have informed them. They didn’t accept my story. [Giggles] since my children are Swifties. Furthermore, they didn’t think that dad had performed with Taylor Swift. I had to take out and play the DVD as a result. And this is exactly how they were. [Waits a long time]
